YouTube monetization requires 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 valid public watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million valid public Shorts views in the last 90 days. Most channels stall because they treat those numbers as a distant dream instead of a 90-day project with weekly targets.
Here's the exact sequence we use to take a faceless finance channel from zero to monetization-ready — no face, no prior audience, no expensive gear.
1. Pick a sub-niche you can win
"Personal finance" is too broad for a new channel — you'll be buried under creators with million-subscriber advantages. Win a slice instead:
- Debt payoff journeys — high emotional resonance, strong search demand
- First-time investing — evergreen, premium CPMs, endless angles
- Money mistakes / financial horror stories — built for shares
- Side hustle income breakdowns — pairs perfectly with affiliate offers
- Money rules by age group (20s, 30s, 40s) — sharp targeting
The test: can you name 30 video ideas in 15 minutes? If not, narrow further. Finance sub-niches carry the highest CPMs online ($18–48 range), so volume matters less than consistency — but you need enough runway of ideas to publish daily.
2. Days 1–7: Set up assets
Week one is about removing every excuse to not publish. You need:
- Channel name + banner + logo — 2 hours in Canva, done
- Narration voice — your own voice recorded off-camera, or a licensed AI voice. Test both on the same script and pick by retention, not preference
- Stock footage library — one subscription (Pexels is free; Storyblocks/Epidemic Sound if budget allows)
- Three video templates — intro, lower-thirds, outro. Build once, reuse forever
- 10 researched scripts — title, hook, outline, and the offer each video will link to
Batch all of this. A single focused weekend gets you to Monday with everything in place — which is exactly when production starts.
3. Days 8–30: The content sprint
Your first 30 days are about momentum and pattern recognition, not perfection. Target:
- 12 long-form videos (8–12 minutes — long enough for mid-roll ads later)
- 30 Shorts — 30–60 seconds, each cut from or teasing a long-form video
- Publishing schedule — 3 long-form per week, 1 Short per day
Structure every long-form video the same way: hook (0–15 seconds) → promise → 3–5 value beats → payoff → call to action. The first 15 seconds decide everything; write five alternatives and pick the sharpest.
Expect your first videos to underperform. That's data, not failure. Note which topics, hooks, and thumbnail styles get clicks — that's your playbook for month two.
4. Days 31–60: Cadence & feedback loop
Now you have enough data to iterate. Every week:
- Check click-through rate (CTR) — under 4% means thumbnail/title work; the content isn't the problem yet
- Check average view duration — people leaving early means the hook or pacing is off
- Double down on winners — a video that outperformed? Make three variations on it
- Cut what's flat — don't force a series nobody watches
Stay on cadence: 3 long-form + 1 Short per day. Consistency compounds — channels that publish daily grow measurably faster than weekly channels covering the same quality ground.
5. Days 61–90: The monetization push
In the final month, focus on the fastest path to thresholds:
- Shorts for subscriber velocity — Shorts drive subscriptions; long-form drives watch hours. Use both deliberately
- Playlists and end screens — chain videos together so one view becomes three
- Search-optimized titles — finance queries ("how to start investing with $100") have durable search demand; target it
- Pin a comment + description links — start building your affiliate list now, so day one of monetization already has multiple revenue lines
Reaching 4,000 watch hours in 90 days means roughly 45 hours of watch time per week — about 4–5 strong long-form videos each getting a few thousand views, plus Shorts spillover. It's demanding but absolutely achievable with daily publishing.
6. 5 mistakes that kill new channels
- Perfectionism before proof — your 10th video teaches you more than 10 extra hours of polishing your 1st
- Inconsistent uploads — the algorithm rewards predictable schedules, not sporadic bursts
- No thumbnail system — design a repeatable style so viewers recognize you in the feed
- Ignoring the first 15 seconds — a slow intro costs you the video before it starts
- Monetizing too late — affiliate links and email capture work at 100 subscribers, not just 1,000
7. Launch checklist
- ☐ Sub-niche chosen · 30+ video ideas listed
- ☐ Channel assets done (banner, logo, about, links)
- ☐ Voice + stock + templates selected
- ☐ 10 scripts written in batch
- ☐ First 12 videos produced and scheduled
- ☐ Shorts pipeline running daily
- ☐ Affiliate offers placed in descriptions
- ☐ Weekly review ritual on the calendar
Reality check
90 days is an aggressive but realistic timeline if you publish daily and iterate weekly. Results vary with niche, quality, and market timing — nothing here is a guarantee. See our Earnings Disclaimer.
